Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of thin needles into the skin at specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow and promote healing. If you are local in the Asheville area call Dr. Hanna to see how she might be able to help you!
Sensations vary from person to person, but most people experience minimal discomfort during acupuncture. The needles used are very thin, and any sensation typically fades quickly. Dr. Hanna always loves communication during sessions. She is more than welcome to make you feel the needles or make you not feel the needles.
Acupuncture is known for treating a wide range of conditions, including pain (such as back pain, migraines, and arthritis), anxiety, stress, insomnia, digestive issues, and more. It can also be used for general wellness and preventive care. Dr. Hanna's specialty is treating emotional health but she will treat whatever is at hand!
Acupuncture sessions usually last between 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the practitioner and the specific treatment plan. At Red Serpent Acupuncture appointments are 90 minutes long to make sure Dr. Hanna gives you enough rest time.
The number of sessions needed varies depending on the individual and the condition being treated. Some people experience relief after just one session, while others may need multiple sessions over several weeks or months. Typically one treatment a week for 4 weeks is recommended and then Dr. Hanna reevaluates to see how often treatment is needed.
Acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner. Some people may experience minor side effects such as soreness, bruising, or slight bleeding at the needle insertion sites. Serious side effects are rare.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid eating a heavy meal or consuming alcohol or caffeine before your appointment. It's also helpful to have a list of any medications you're taking and to inform Dr. Hanna of any medical conditions you have.
Look for an acupuncturist who is licensed and certified by a reputable organization, such as the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). You can also ask for recommendations from your healthcare provider or friends and family.
Some insurance plans may cover acupuncture, but coverage varies widely. It's best to check with your insurance provider to see if acupuncture is included in your plan and what the coverage details are.
Dr. Hanna loves team based approach. Acupuncture can often be used alongside other conventional medical treatments, such as medication, physical therapy, or chiropractic. It's important to communicate with your healthcare provider and acupuncturist to ensure a coordinated approach to your healthcare.
